Concept mapping software brings visual learning to lessons

Faculty at Crowder College, Neosho, Missouri, have found that SMART Ideas 3.1 software meets the needs of students and teachers in a variety of ways.

"SMART Ideas software provides my students and me with a visual of how we’ve planned our class organization, and we can look ahead or back at this plan any time."

– Patsy Gray, Teacher-Education Instructor

Patsy Gray, a teacher-education instructor, uses the software to create easy links to NPR (National Public Radio) topics that relate to her classes. She also organizes her classes by chapters, units or course competencies using SMART Ideas software, creating the outline and adding appropriate links to Web pages and Microsoft Word documents.

“SMART Ideas software provides my students and me with a visual of how we’ve planned our class organization, and we can look ahead or back at this plan any time,” explains Gray.

Dr. John Rucker, Dean of Instruction, uses SMART Ideas software to create flow diagrams to assist in the academic advising of students.

Health instructor Rachael Kennedy created a lesson with SMART Ideas software that starts with a picture of a human skeleton. Kennedy then added names of the parts of the skeleton, attaching sub-layers with more information and links to related websites and other files.

John Perkins, a political science instructor, uses SMART Ideas software to show his students the structure of the U.S. government and the relationships among different branches of government.

As Mike Jernigan, education technology specialist, explains, all of these teachers have been satisfied with the results they’ve seen when using SMART Ideas software.
